On June 4, 1783, Joseph-Michel Montgolfier and his brother Jacques-Étienne Montgolfier completed the first public demonstration of a hot air balloon in order to claim their invention. Their prototype, which flew for approximately 10 minutes and traveled 1.2 miles at altitudes above 5,000 feet, finally made air travel for humans a possibility, though many were still skeptical of both the practicality and safety of hot air balloons.

Cache Valley Rendezvous: School Days!

Next Tuesday, May 19, we will be going to the Cache Valley Rendezvous located up Left Hand Fork of Blacksmith Fork Canyon. The rendezvous showcases traditional 1835 Fur Trade era crafts and skills. This is the oldest rendezvous reenactment in Utah. There will be a traditional crafts, demonstrations, and activities to better understand the important role these early explorers played in Utah's history.

Permission slips went home today. (Thursday) Please return by Monday. We will be taking buses.

Chef Heather is prepared to send us with sack lunches. If your student is planning on bringing their lunch from home, I need to know before Monday.

Since we will be outside, students need to plan appropriately. Even in good weather, it can be a bit cold in the mornings.

Movie: Disney's Earth

Mrs. Wallin has made arrangements for several classes to celebrate Earth Day by watching the new film from Disney Nature, Earth. What a great opportunity! It is being released nationwide on Earth Day, this Wednesday. The school has a private showing THIS Wednesday at 9:30 on Earth Day @ the University 6 Theaters in Logan. Since this is a special showing, there will be no concessions available at the theater. We should survive without popcorn and drinks. I will take care of paying for the student's ticket cost.

Mrs. Wallin has done a lot of work to schedule this showing, including negotiating through several cancellations between Disney and the Westates Theaters. She deserves our thanks for making this opportunity available.

What you need to do:

Sign and return the permission slip I am sending home today. I will need this slip returned on Tuesday. No exceptions.
On Wednesday, have your child at school on time... 8:30 am. We will need to catch an LTD bus right at 8:40. Students who are late will be left behind.

iPod/Audio Book Study: Help Needed

As you know, I am working towards the completion of my Ph.D. program. I finish my last two courses this semester and will spend next year gathering data and writing my dissertation. The use of iPods and audiobooks in my classroom in not an accident. I am exploring the influence of audiobooks and iPod players on the reading habits of students. (I could give you a whole lot more detail but you may not appreciate it the way I do)

I am looking for some help with my current study. I am interested in finding out more about your (parent's) perceptions of how technology has influenced your student's reading habits at home.

If you participate, you will be asked to do four things:

Participate in one 30-minute to one-hour interview in the location of your choice where you will be asked questions regarding your child’s home reading habits, interaction with reading materials, interaction with technology, and how you perceive the use of the audio books and iPod players in the classroom has influenced these factors.
Maintain an observation journal for one week of your students’ home reading habits and interaction with technology.
Take pictures of your child’s home reading environment and available technology. A digital camera, along with instructions for its use, will be provided to you for this task.
Participate in one follow up 30-minute to one-hour interview after your week of journal and photo taking is complete.

I, of course, will give more details and provide detailed instructions if you choose to participate. The project should give me some valuable insight on how the iPods and audiobooks are influencing reading habits and not take too much of your time.

If you are willing to participate, please email, phone, or send a note to school by Wednesday, April 1. If more than five of you wish to help (that would be great!) I will randomly select from all those who let me know. While I would love to have all parents help, it would be overwhelming to involve everyone.

I am very proud of the student's hard work over the last few months. They have grown into a group who loves reading, celebrates each others successes, and consistently are able to learn on their own. They are really developing that important ability to decide what areas are weaknesses and find strategies to improve. All this has freed me to work more often with individual students, helping them grow a lot faster than trying to work with the entire class at the same time. These important skills will be beneficial to their future learning.

We are ready to start the dreaded SPELLING! Up to this point, spelling instruction would have been a frustrational effort, at best. As you may have learned, each student has uniue quirks, challenges, and needs regarding spelling. This is difficult to deal with in whole group instruction. Thus, we have not approached individual spelling instruction previously.

We will start the whole class off this week with the same list, 15 commonly misspelled words. (I know this is a contridiction to the whole individual child thing above) However, this week's focus is helping students understand where activities, resources, and helps can be found for future spelling. Starting next week, I will be helping students develop a 'hybrid' spelling list. It will be a combination of words I choose (appropriate to their ability), words used in class context (like science or math vocabulary) and words your student will choose (from their own writing and/or word lists).

Specifically, if you go directly to my customized username, you will be able to see the lists as well as practice with a combination of tests, activities and learning helps. I have posted a direct link to my lists on the classroom website as well as talked students through how to use the website.

Early Release 3/9/09: Snow

I hope all students have enjoyed an extra half day of snow adventure today. After receiving the news at noon, I quickly finished my lunch and worked with other teachers on how to best handle keeping the students safe while waiting for their transportation home. I assume that everyone made it safely. The students did a great job maintaining order in the room while we tried to personally contact all of you. (it will be interesting to see what that does to my cell phone bill) Thank you for your patience, help, and cooperation in keeping all students into a safe situation. Hopefully the sledding and snowman making was great!

I've had some parents ask about specific reasoning and/or situations behind the decision for an early release. Additionally there have been some questions about the notification system(s) used in case of emergency. I will have to defer any questions about those issues to Dr. Peterson mark.peterson@usu.edu as I was not involved in today's discussion or know the inner workings of the parental notification system.

Thanks again for all you do. I have the best parents and enjoy working with your students in our grand adventure!

• The Usborne Big Book of Experiments (science) For the student who likes some hands on adventure. This book provides some really great ways to do science with common items in the home.
• Bone #9 (graphic novel) The final book in this graphic novel adventure is nearly 3x the size of any of the previous. The artwork and storyline is engaging. A bit of a warning, however.... I previewed this at Borders a few weeks ago. There is 1 page of warfare violence included. Much like Harry Potter #7, this version is darker and more serious than the previous books. You may want to preview it first at: http://www.boneville.com or at a local bookstore.
• The Candy Shop War (action/adventure) Utah author, Brandon Mull, spins a great tale of four kids who find themselves involved with mystery, adventure, and candy that bestows magic powers.
• The River (action) Especially good for boy readers, Gary Paulsen provides great stories and descriptions to get readers involved in his books.

Scholastic Classroom Lucky
• The 39 Clues: Book Two (mystery) I am going to order this for the class. I have not read book one, but have heard a lot of hype about the series. Apparently, it’s quite interactive and has readers using their thinking and reasoning skills. Also available as an audiobook in this month’s order.
• Harry Houdini (Biography) Great publisher, great topic.
• Fantasy Favorites Duo: (fantasy) I love half magic. It’s funny and adventurous. Its hard to resist the chaos from a magical coin that only grants half wishes.
• The Invention of Hugo Cabret: (historical fiction) Winner of the 2008 Caldecott award for best illustrations in a children’s book. Half book, half illustrations. The engaging story uses both to tell about the amazing man behind a robot-like invention that can draw a complex picture, without human help.
• The Tale of Despereaux: (fantasy) On my top ten book list. Beautifully written with great, easy to read dialogue.

For the girl in the class...

I just saw this. From the Newbery Award Winning author, Neil Gaiman. He has a wonderful reading voice and a unique/quirky way of looking at the world.

I really enjoyed his audiobook narration of this year’s Newbery Award-winning The Graveyard Book, of whom he is the author. Its a bit dark in chapter one but very engaging for the rest. A good read for boys. Note... he is also the author for Coraline, the new Tim Burton animated film. I haven't seen that yet but hear it is quirky, a bit dark, but very good.

Author's Club: Chocolate Party

From our student teacher, Mrs. Grandy...

On Friday 27th we will be holding the Author's Club Chocolate Night. For this our students should have completed a book under the genre of Chocolate or Candy. Some of the selections included Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, The Candy Shop Wars, The Chocolate Touch, and Chocolate Fever. For this month's Author Club we will be meeting in Mr. Johnson's classroom at 7:00 p.m. The party will be similar to the Golden Ticket in Charlie and The Chocolate Factory meaning students and one adult friend will be admitted.

If you'll be attending and would like to bring a chocolate treat to share with the class that would be wonderful. (Cookies, treats, candy, anything chocolate!) We will also have a Chocolate Fountain here in the classroom. If you know of a good source for getting melting chocolate please let us know! Any treats that may be dipped into a chocolate fountain will also be welcome. The night will be full of jelly bean checkers, cake walks and much more! Hope to see you there!

oops... monthly book project

A big thanks to Georgette White who reminded me I had not sent out details about February's Monthly Book Project. Because this month has been a bit hectic (student teacher, short month, snow, breaks, etc.) why don't we have a 'floating deadline' for this project. Like... anytime in the next two weeks. It's a pretty kicked back project anyway and I have been very pleased with the student's efforts to increase their diversity of books read.

Theme: Caldecott Award Winner

Project: Original Art Work

Due Date: anytime before March 6 (Friday)

Description:
You will be reading a Caldecott Award winning book, creating an original piece of artwork based off the book’s illustrations, and sharing your project with the class.

The Caldecott Medal was named in honor of nineteenth-century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.

To complete the project, you must choose a Caldecott Award book (winner or honor). Choose an illustration style you like and would like to imitate. You will then illustrate a portion of the book, in the style of the artist. Make sure you choose a book that you like the illustrations, not necessarily the story.

Guidelines:
Choose a book with artwork you enjoy and want to try to imitate.
Your artwork project must be your own work. Others may offer advice, but cannot help.
Artwork must be no larger than 8 inches x 10 inches.
Artwork must be mounted on a 9 inch x 12 inch colored paper. (available at school)
Checklist/guideline sheet must be attached to the back of the 9 x 12 colored paper.
You must follow the steps listed on the checklist/guidelines listed.

Recommended Supplies
Art supplies, in the same style of your book’s artwork.

Science Unplugged

Parent Conferences Next Week

Format: Student-lead (open house). Come whenever you wish. Stay as long/short as you wish. Leave when you need.

Traditionally, I have formatted the mid-year conference as a "student-lead" session. This means your student will spend some time showing some projects they have been working on, discussing areas they have been improving, and looking at goals for what to improve. They will have 'cue' sheet and will have been coached on how to lead the discussion in the appropriate direction and impress you enough to get ice cream afterward.

I serve as a resource in this process and will be available in the room. During these conferences, I try to avoid the 'traditional' sit down and talk conferences, instead focusing on letting the student guide the discussion. I, as always, will jump in to give my teaching opinion on progress and make sure appropriate goals are being set for areas of improvement. I'll even have the back room available if you would like a private session to discuss issues you may not feel comfortable in the student-lead (open classroom) environment.

Multiple students may be leading conferences in the room at the same time. Do not be concerned. The biggest issue is that students will be 'magnetically' pulled together and want to share cool stuff with their friend's parents. (you)

As always, the goal of the conference is to come away with:

an awareness of your student's academic performance,
answers to any questions you may have about what is happening in the classroom,
thoughtful reflection of areas your student is doing well in,
insightful and wise judgments of the most important areas for improvement, and
3 concrete goals to help your student improve between March 1 - end of the year.

Good Listen

I just finished listening to Peter and the Starcatchers on our classroom iPods. What a great listen, read by Jim Dale, the same narrator who did all the Harry Potter audiobook versions. If you like Peter Pan, adventure, and/or would like to find out how Neverland came about, I would reccomend this book. Beware, the audio version is 8 hours 40 minutes. Well worth it though.

Grade 5-9–This prequel to Peter Pan refers as much to the 1953 animated Disney film as to J. M. Barrie's original play and novel. The early chapters introduce the archetypal antagonists: Peter, leader of a group of orphan boys being sent into slavery aboard the Never Land, and Black Stache, a fearsome pirate who commands a villainous crew. Science and pop bottles

From Mrs. Grandy... We are in the process of a four week science unit. We have already studied clouds and are currently covering the water cycle. Our agenda this week includes experiments to aid comprehension of water cycle parts. We will be doing everything from measuring evaporation rates to discovering heat energy. As part of our experiments we will need some supplies from home. If possible, please send your student to school with a 2 liter pop bottle and lid by Wednesday.

In the upcoming weeks we will be covering air pressure and types of weather and patterns. Any discussion at home about weather will help contribute to our classroom discussion. Thank you!

• Diary of a Wimpy Kid: the Last Straw (graphic novel) This is the brand new release in this hilariously engaging series. If you have a reluctant reader, this may be a good choice.
• The Goose Girl (fantasy) This Utah author made it big with this book. If you like fairy tales, you might enjoy this twist on some traditional stories.
• Marie Curie (biography) I have been impressed with any DK biography I have read. I cannot imagine this will not be engaging, full of photos and facts. One of the best biography series for elementary students currently available.
• Favorite Greek Myths (information) This is a great book to introduce students to the myths that form a foundation of modern legend.

Scholastic Classroom Lucky
• A Pizza the Size of the Sun (poetry) If you like Shel Silverstein, you should try this great collection of Jack Prelutsky poems. Funny, witty, charming.
• Sarah, Plain and Tall collection (historical fiction) Life on the prairie was not easy for early homesteaders. This series of books captures the difficulty of early homestead life while bringing a wonderful sense of warmth to the family in the story.

Author of the Month: January (update)

OK...

after negotiations with the PTA over the last ten days (since they rescheduled Boy's Night Out from the 16th) They have moved their time up to 6:30 to accommodate us.
many students have worked hard to complete a Jean DuPrau book and many family members are coming with students (about 40-50 people all together)
many boys in the class would like make it to boys night out AND our celebration.

We will begin the City of Ember movie celebration at 7:30 pm. a half hour later that originally planned. This will allow boys who want to attend Boy's Night Out to make it to both events.

I'm not sure what plans are for refreshments. We can squeeze into the classroom (and have snacks while we watch). OR we can lounge in the auditorium (and not have snacks/no food or drink allowed). Either way, I'll have some light refreshments... popcorn and drinks.

I'm looking forward to a fun evening, celebrating the hard work of those students who have chosen to complete a book by our author of the month. As always, if you have questions, please feel free to email, call, or just come visit.

My name is Haley Loveland and I am currently a sophomore at Utah State University where I am working on a composite major in Elementary Education and Severe Special Education. Some things I enjoy are reading, playing games with my roommates (one of our favorites is Catch Phrase), and writing e-mails to my little sister. My favorite thing to eat is tortilla chips and salsa.

As a Level II student I have the opportunity of being with your children in Mr. Johnson's classroom on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays for the next five weeks. I am very excited for this experience and look forward to working with everyone.

Optional/Earned activity on Friday... Monthly Author's Club Video Party. Only for students who have read a book by Jean DuPrau. We will start the video party at 7:00 pm in the classroom. The movie is The City of Ember, rated PG. I previewed the movie this weekend and really enjoyed how well it captured the feeling of the book. Students are welcome to make it a family night out and bring all your family members. (immediate family only, please) I will provide some popcorn and drinks. However, If you are coming, I would love some help with refreshments. Feel free to bring pillows, blankets, and snacks to enjoy a celebration of your student's reading 'beyond' what was expected. If we get too crowded, we'll move into the auditorium and have a really big screen showing. See this previous blog entry for details.

Scholastic Star-Spangled History

Who Was Abraham Lincoln? (biography) Start off the New Year with some great biographies about one of the most well known US Presidents. Both are great reads for this age. ¬Lincoln: A Photo Biography is exceptional in its use of text and photos to chronicle the live of Mr. Lincoln
Number the Stars (historical fiction) Discussing racial issues, the holocaust, and the fear that existed in WWII Europe can be difficult with students at this age. This book does a wonderful job telling the story of two friends in Denmark and the underground struggle against Nazi idealism. Great read, especially for strong female heroines!
Christopher Paul Curtis Pack (historical fiction) If you are looking for some engaging books about civil rights in America, read these. They make me laugh and cry with well-written stories and characters. Especially funny is the ‘kissing’ the frozen rear-view mirror episode in The Watsons go to Birmingham, 1963.
Harry Houdini (biography) From DK books, this engaging biography of the famous magician is told with a great combination of text and photographs.
Scholastic Atlas of the United States (information) A great reference to have at home, filled with maps and information to help learn more about the nation we live in.
On the Wings of Heroes (historical fiction) One of Rosine Hamblin’s (EBLS Library) favorite books in the past few years. Set in WWII, this story is told from the viewpoint of a young boy living at home, concerned about his brother fighting in the war.

The Tale of Despereaux (fantasy) One of my favorite books. I was a bit sad when they made a movie adaptation because the book is so very charming, insightful, and engaging. When the book first came out, I bought a copy for all my brothers, sisters, parents and relatives. It definitely has a spot in Mr. Johnson’s top 10 books of all time. Audio version available on the iPods in the classroom audio library!
Inkheart (fantasy) Now a movie, originally a great book. Everything a good book should have. Audio version available on the iPods in the classroom audio library!
Abraham Lincoln (biography) From DK books, this engaging biography of the famous president is told with a great combination of text and photographs. One of the best biography series for elementary students currently available.
Astronomy (information) Just about anything from DK books will capture the attention. Filled with great photographs, page layout and text, a great primer to the sky above.

Scholastic Classroom Favorites

Roald Dahl Pack (fantasy/fiction) The only thing I need to say… He is my favorite children’s author. Roald Dahl is #1 on Mr. Johnson’s best children’s authors top 10 list. Everyone should own at least one of his books.
Funny Pigeon Pack (picture book) I know I am (technically) too old for picture books. But… I can’t help smile and laugh when I read my first pigeon book. Hilarious!
Holes (fiction) A classic tale. The movie adaptation is great. The story is funny, mysterious, and has a few fun surprises throughout. Watch the movie, read the book.

The second authors of the month club begins today... In order to be eligible for the 'reward,' students must have complete a book by the author on or before January 30. Books read previous to January 2009 do not count.

As you know, I started the author of the month club as a way for students to expand their experience with books and authors they may not have considered otherwise. Participation in the club is completely voluntary.

On Wednesday I am sending home with your student some materials provided from the Utah State Office of Education. They include a music CD and accompanying material, Mind Over Matter, songs that educate children about the damaging effects of alcohol on their developing brains.

We have not discussed the materials in class nor do I have plans to utilize them in our curriculum. I did feel they are useful, informative, and could provide an avenue for your family to discuss this important topic a manner and setting you choose.

Description:
You will choose and read a book(s) about a person. It may be either a biography or an autobiography. This project is designed to help you understand the lives, dreams, and challenges of other people. You will complete the project by making a mobile to represent your book and the life of the person featured. The finished mobiles will hang in our classroom or the library to encourage other students to read these books.

Guidelines:

size: no more than 1 meter x 1 meter x 1 meter
Must include the title of the book
Must include the author of the book
Must include a drawing or picture of the person you have learned about.
Must include drawings or pictures that depict significant events in the life of the person the book talks about.
May include short descriptions or passages from the book.
You may not choose someone you already know a lot about.

Recommended Supplies

string (fishing line or kite line work well)
pictures or drawings from the book
manila folders or cardboard to paste the pictures on (they provide a firm backing so the mobile doesn’t sag)

Choose someone you want to learn about. Maybe someone who did/does something your are interested in. A hero, an explorer, your ancestor, or someone unique!

In the Mine!

On Tuesday, we will be spending the day 'working in the mine.' Meaning... the classroom will be dark, no lights, a bit cooler than usual. It is a fun day... a little apprehension at first, not knowing what to expect.

We'll listen to some mining music, talk about mining superstitions, watch the movie version of By The Great Horn Spoon (a book we just finished), and learn a bit about telegraphy and morris code.

Students will need to bring their own light source to work. (no flames, candles, etc) Often, batteries will die. Don't worry. Usually one flashlight per 1-4 people gives enough light for a group to work.

Some parents have suggested that updates on assignments would be helpful in supporting their student's efforts at home. Here is the first one.

As you may know, we've created a 'fictitious' Utah mining town called Silver Point. Each student has a been given a unique job and has developed a character for their person. For writing, we are creating a journal, documenting major events that happened in a typical Utah mining town. The large objective is to help better understand the role mining and the railroad had in bringing cultural diversity to Utah. Each Silver Point Journal brings a new event, a new fate. You'll notice in today's fate, characters are involved. We randomly draw student's characters to be involved in the fates. Here is today's fate....

Silver Point Journal: Fire!
October 8, 1869
During the night, a lantern was tipped over on accident, causing a fire on main street. The Hotel owned by Joe McKinley was burned to the ground. Fortunately, no one was injured. The doctor’s office and the church suffered minor damage. The telegraph office burned to the ground. Unfortunately all communication over the telegraph will be unavailable until the damage is fixed. What will you do without being able to send telegraphs to your family? Bob Quinlee, the assayer, Joseph McKinley, a miner, and Sam McKinley, another miner, all suffered some pretty bad burns. They were trying to save Steve and Jared Newmac’s dog who was trapped in a building. Unfortunately, the dog did not survive.

Ponderin' and Thinkin'

I've been pondering over the reading habits of the students. (big thanks to the Stricklands for some in-depth insight) Here are the general conclusions I've arrived at: (please remember these apply to the 'overall/average/general/common' student. Each student is different)

If it is a Magic Tree House book, it will be ok.
If it will take time, effort, and more than 1 week to finish, I won't choose to read it.
If it is a chapter book, I hope there is a movie so I can see if I'm interested.
I want someone to tell me what to read (but they probably will choose something I'm not interested in)
If you (teacher or parent) are excited about a book, I might be, but only if you read it to me.
Magazines and picture books rock! (See conclusion #2)

Given these basic 'habits' I see, there is a big task facing us. (I say us because I only get them this year. You get them for a while longer) Basically, we need to find ways of getting students to

read for the joy of reading.
look/browse/spend some significant time/ with a wide variety of books
read beyond 'easy.'
trust themselves to choose challenging material

To help promote these 'ideals' in class, I am implementing a new opportunity... The Author of the Month

Our first open market day.

Some students would like the opportunity to earn more KJ’s by selling items in class. Since I do not want the classroom to become a mad house, please observe the following rules.

Your student is not required to bring things to sell. It is entirely a voluntary.
Your student must purchase a business license from Maddie before 8:40 am, Tuesday.
If your student chooses to sell something, please keep it small. (pencils, penny candy, erasers) I do not encourage students to spend their college fund or life savings. Students have been given specific instructions to NOT sell anything without asking you about the items first. (I really don't want anyone loosing a family heirloom)

Also, in the afternoon, we will be having a read-a-thon. Your student should have a good book(s) ready to go. They have permission to bring a pillow or stuffed animal to snuggle/rest their head on. They DO NOT have permission to bring toys, pj's, bean bag chairs, or hammocks! The focus is reading. Hopefully some of the students will take the opportunity to catch up on information for their monthly book project.

PS... I just found my front yard is leaking. (bad shut off valve) Do any of you have/know of a backhoe I can rent for cheap? Right now, my plan is to recreate a scene from Holes and dig a 5 x 5 x 5 hole in my yard on Wednesday.

For those of you interested in how an audiobook is made... watch on.
I think it's pretty interesting stuff. The good news is, I have a computer ready to go. We can start our own classroom productions of audiobooks. Of course, to remain legal in the copyright arena, we will only be able to listen to them as part of our classroom environment. But, It will still be worth it. Perhaps you can have your child bring one of our iPods home with an audiobook they helped make. Some nice weekend listening for the chilly days to come.

Free, family friendly event showcases wonders of science

Ever wonder how jumbo jets stay aloft, what puts color in a color TV or considered the crushing force of Earth’s atmosphere? Inquiring minds of all ages are invited to attend Utah State University’s Physics Demonstration Show on campus Friday, Nov. 21. The gathering, which begins at 7 p.m. in the Eccles Science Learning Center auditorium, room 130, is free and open to all. “We’re kicking off Thanksgiving week with an evening of fanfare, fascination and family fun,” says James Coburn, Teaching Laboratory supervisor in USU’s Physics Department. “This is a great opportunity for scientists young and old to learn together.”

Physics? Fun?

“Absolutely,” says Coburn. “Unfortunately, many are intimidated by physics study. But it shouldn’t be that way – learning about science is something everyone can enjoy.”

Attendees will observe a variety of innovative, mind-stretching experiments covering a spectrum of topics ranging from pressure, buoyancy, sound, electricity and magnetism to light and superconductivity.

Parking at for the gathering is available in the Aggie Parking Terrace at 700 E. 600 North at $1.50 per hour. Located just west of the ESLC, the terrace is within a short walking distance of the event. Surface parking is also available in the lot south of Old Main.

They are now making a movie based off this story of an underground city that is beginning to fall apart at the seams. Mystery, suspense, strong heroes and heroines! If the movie looks good, you’ll really enjoy this book.
Number the Stars (historical fiction) Discussing racial issues, the holocaust, and the fear that existed in WWII Europe can be difficult with students at this age. Warriors (action/fantasy) I haven’t read this series, only heard good things about it. It sounds a lot like the Redwall series, using animals as the main characters.

Chronicles of Narnia Boxed Set (fantasy) The classic tales from C.S. Lewis.

Shel Silverstein Poetry Pack (poetry) I think Shel’s cleverness matches that of Dr. Suess. Although Shel has more of a biting edge and provides some absolutely memorable poems about everything.
The Usborne Big Book of Experiments (information) Many of our students love science. Get them some hands on experience with the 125 experiments in this book.

Scholastic Holiday Gift Books

Fancy Nancy’s Favorite Fancy Words Ok. Fancy Nancy was written as a picture book for younger children. But… I think we all have a little Fancy Nancy inside use. Plus, you can use this against your daughter to help survive the upcoming teenage years!
Inkheart Trilogy Boxed Set (fantasy/fiction) I’ve heard nothing but good about this series. I’m planning on getting a copy for the classroom. Plus, they are making Inkheart into a movie. High interest reading.
Bone Comic Collection (graphic novel) I have all the Bone books at home. They are vey high interest, especially to boys. The drawing are wonderful with engaging storylines. Not the comic books of the past.
Calvin and Hobbes Pack (comic) Do I need to say anything? I want to escape to Calvin’s world some days. Escape with a great collection of the classic comic strip.

Project: Make a Book (any style)
Due Date: December 12 (Friday)

Description:
You will need to choose a topic and at least four information books to read about that topic. In addition to the four books, you can find additional information on the Internet, in a museum, or any other source. After gaining a brain full of knowledge, you will create your own book!

Don’t choose a topic that is too big, like animals (there are too many types of animals. Mammals, reptiles, amphibians, crustaceans, etc.)

Don’t choose a topic that is too narrow, like the Australian Frill Lizard. (it will be too hard to find four books about the topic)

Your home-made book will highlight fascinating facts, key things to know, and other books or websites to find more information about the topic. It should be a good summary of your topic, especially for someone who may not know much about it.

We will visit the library often, so you can read at least four books about your topic. You can read about your topic in a larger book, like an encyclopedia. But, I will want it to have lots of good information about your topic. I will insist you finish all four books before you begin designing your home-made book.

I will help by showing you several different ways to make home-made books and giving you web sites to look at for ideas. I hope you will use your creativity and explore a bit.

Guidelines:

You must read at least 4 books about your topic.

Surf and curs(ive)

We are now surfin' and cursiv(ing). Just ask you student. 15 minutes a day listening to Beach Boys while improving our ability to write in flowing cursive letters. The students are great at sharing their stories of the beach / surfing / boogie-boarding / floating / enjoying the waves.

I had this thought... We should have a surfsive bulletin board that feature fabulous examples of student cursive skills. If you have a photo of your student...

Help Needed!

I am looking for some parents to hep witht he following activities, projects, and/or parties...

iPods: I need someone with some sewing skills to build a hanging 'holder' for our iPods. The holder will need 15 padded pockets, one for each iPod. It will also need a place for craft sticks that have student names on them. Thus, when a student takes an iPod out of the holder, they put their stick in the pocket to indicate they have that iPod. I have sketched this out. If you can help, email or call me.
October 31, 12:30-1:30. Can I call it a party? Friday morning will be a celebration of our Monthly Book Project: Mystery! I would like to have a small 'party' in the afternoon, before our architect instructors come in at 1:45. If you can plan/coordinate an hour's worth of food, games or activities, let me know.
Typing: Students have been writing a lot. Many of them want to now transfer stories over to the computer. We are looking for some adults who can take a written story and get it typed for the students.

We are busy earning and spending KJ’s, the official currency for our class. In fact, many students now have an official job. Each job pays KJs each day. There are many ways to earn, spend, or loose money.

Some students would like to earn KJ’s by selling items in class. Since I do not want the classroom to become a mad house I am limiting times students can do this. Your student will be able to sell one item each week at our Wednesday auctions.

Students are not required to auction. It is entirely a voluntary way to earn and spend some KJ’s. If your student would like to auction something, please keep it small. (pencils, penny candy, erasers) I do not encourage students to spend their college fund or life savings.

The first auction is tomorrow. It should be fun. If you have any concerns or questions, please contact me.

Description:
Your mission, whether you wish to accept it or not, is to choose and read a mystery/suspense genre book.

NO OTHER STUDENT IS TO KNOW THE IDENTITY OF YOUR BOOK.

Under a cloak of secrecy, you will collect items giving clues as to the identity of your book. All items are to be placed into a ‘mystery’ box and delivered to Mr. X, (also know as KJ), on the day of October 31. On that day, you will also need to disguise yourself as a character from your book to give other students another clue. On October 31, you will reveal the true identity of your book after all clues have sufficiently been examined.

Guidelines:

Size: shoe box (approximately)
The book title, author, and your name must be written only on the bottom of the box. (where it will not be seen when sitting on a table)
At least 8 items (objects, photos, pictures, etc.) must be included in the box to give clues about the book.
The box must be decorated in the style of the book. (drawings, pictures, colors)
Clues may not be too difficult or too easy.
You must dress as a character from your book on October 31!

Recommended Supplies

Shoe box or other box, with lid
Any item that might work as a clue to the identity of the book.
Paint, drawings, or pictures to decorate the box.
Costume, outfit, or other clothing to dress like a character in your book.

The Invention of Hugo Cabret (historical fiction) Won the 2008 Caldecott Medal for best illustration in a children’s book. The story is part written novel, part illustrations. You have to use both to follow the story. Engaging and cool.
Fairest (fable/fairy tale) From the author of Ella Enchanted. I haven’t read it but knowing Gail Carson Levine, it has to be good. Most likely some strong girl characters involved.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid (graphic novel) Fun, engaging books utilizing drawings and text. The are especially appealing to reluctant boy readers.
Guinness World Records 2009 (information) This is a favorite for almost any 4th grader I know. Fascinating facts and information. (math that they don’t realize)
Scary Stories Set (mystery) Classic tales to share around a campfire, dark room, or other October setting. Well written, omitting a lot of blood and gore popular to today’s horror genre.
Fabelhaven (fantasy) From Utah author Brandon Mull. The first book in this engaging series. Brandon is visiting EBLS later this year!

I'm happy to announce the following:

Last Thursday 15 iPod Nanos were ordered for our classroom, a donation of $2.,235! I have been working with a potential donor over the last several months about the use of audio books as part of the classroom reading/literacy program. We were able to finalize the purchase last week. The iPods are on the way to our classroom and should arrive this week. You can track their shipment for an interesting geography activity.

Over the last several months I have been collecting audio books and creating an iTunes library on a computer that will serve as our audio book library. I have brought my entire collection of books on CD from home to make available. Our current collection is just over 35 titles, with more being added weekly as they are purchased, donated, or I find them free (legally) online.

Copyright legality is an interesting question as part of this project. So far, the following types of books exist in our collection:

free online: ususally books in the public domain that are read by either human or computer. I try to avoid the computer as they aren't that great listening.
free podcasts: online podcasts that deliver new stories on a regular basis, usually weekly. Currently we are getting feeds from Storynory and The Classic Tales Podcast, to name a few.
Mr. Johnson's personal collection: audio books on CD that I have collected over the years. To make it legal to use these, the following must be strictly followed: *they cannot be used for any reason other than classroom 'instructional' use. (meaning, they are available as part of my instructional program for reading and literacy) *I am not using the CD copies in addition to the digital copies. (meaning, the CDs are archived copies and only availible for use if the digital copy goes bad) *Any additional copies cannot be made/ripped/burned and/or shared on devices other than our audio library iTunes library and iPods sychronized exclusively to that library.

I am currently seeking/pursuing funding to keep our collection growing. My best option is to purchase books in a digital format. They usually run $3-$49 per book, just like a CD copy. If you have any sources that would like to help, please let me know.

Also... each student will be sharing an iPod with a partner. I have 15 headphone sets available for use. If your student would like to bring their own headphones to use, please feel welcome. I suggest the be stored in a plastic, ziplock bag with the student's name written on the bag.

Monthly Book Genre: Update

We are coming up on the end of week 3, September. Students should be finishing up their historical fiction book for their monthly book project. We have been going over the 5 W's of news reporting and comparing facts vs. opinions.

Next Monday I will help students start the writing process for their news report. I will work off the assumption that all students have finished their book. If your student is not finishing their book, encourage some quality reading time this weekend.

Utah Native Plant Specialists

Hello! My name is Becky Greene and I LOVE EDITH BOWEN! I was a student here when I was a young buckaroo, so my love and passion for this place runs very deep. This is my second year working as a teacher's aide, last year I was assigned to Mrs. Cook's second grade class. This year I am assigned to Mr. Johnson's fourth grade class, and I am very much looking forward to it!

I am the youngest of 8 kids. I grew up in Smithfield canyon. My mother rarely uses a microwave. I love reading, the color green, traveling, water in a natural setting, thrift stores, running races(I am the person that does them just to finish them, not to win them), and spending time with my family.

I am currently studying at Utah State majoring in Sociology with a minor in Mandarin Chinese. Life is busy! Along with working at Edith Bowen, every afternoon I teach Mandarin at Sky View High School and then get back on the bus heading southbound just in time to make it to my evening classes. And, I recently got engaged and am planning a wedding on top of it all! It's a good thing I am young and full of vigor!..?

I've always been amazed at the amount of information a student can tune out... One minute I can be having a conversation with he/she, providing a "now do this" moment. The next minute they wonder what to do.

For example, today we had finished up some math games. All the students were at their desks. I told them they were headed out for lunch break as soon as their desk was cleared. For good measure and to overcome the talkers in our room, I repeated the directions... twice. ONE MINUTE LATER... a student asks, "are we lining up for Spanish?"

Go figure. Does this happen at home also?

Aidan M. is in a play called The Prince who Wouldn't Speak. It is part of the Unicorn Children's Theatre series. Its in the Unicorn Theatre on the ground floor of the Bullen Centre (next to the Eccles theatre) - 43 Sth Main Street.

It plays sept 6, 13, 20, 27 at 2pm. $2 to get in.

Field Trip: Natural Resource Field Day (9/12/08)

Details: We have been invited to participate in the Natural Resource Field Days sponsored by USU Extension. I have been in year's past and it has been a fabulous experience. The students will be involved in tons of hands on activities involving local soils, water ecosystems and plants. You can preview our day's activities at the Extension website.

Volunteers: While the program does not require adults other than the teacher, I would be willing to take up to four parents. You would need to drive to/from on your own as well as provide your own lunch. But... you would get to spend the day with us in the great outdoors. Email me if you want to be considered.

Sept Book Project: Historical Fiction

Description:
I love history! I love hearing stories about people and events from long ago. Historical Fiction books are based off of events that actually happened. Sometimes the characters are fictional but the story is real. Sometimes the characters are based off real life people but parts are added to make it more interesting. Sometimes the authors just doesn’t know what actually happened, so they create a story using their best guess. It’s part history, part fiction.

Your assignment is to make a news story for HFTV (Historical Fiction Television) about the history in your book. You might need to get some more information about the history your book is actually based on. We want a news story about the ‘factual’ history, not the fiction. Please follow the guidelines below to create a great newscast.

General Guidelines:

Read your book.
Research the history behind your book. (study the facts)
Write a 1 - 3 minute news story.
Turn in a written script to Mr. Johnson before September 26.
Get filmed by Mr. Johnson.
Watch the broadcast of all news reports

Script Guidelines:

The book title, author, and your name must be written at the top of your script.
The script must be neatly written on lined, white paper or typed.
All spelling must be correct.
At least three facts must be included about the history of when your book took place.
When read, the script must be between one and three minutes.

Sickness Spreads

Beginning of school + 26 students in the same room + fluctuating weather = Sick Students!

Today was the first day students began dropping off due to allergies, colds, sniffles, and general 'ickiness.' This morning's group meeting brought four students with complaints of not feeling well with two of them going home by morning break. We hope they get better soon. It's no fun feeling tired and making a tissue box your closest friend.

If your child begins feeling under the weather, please use good judgment in determining school attendance. While I love each child, It's hard to see them in the room feeling so 'yucky' when I know they would rather be home sleeping.

I should give a head's up on assignments we have going on and when things should be done.

County of the Week & Utah in the Western US... these two assignments should be done during reading workshop and turned in on Friday. You can find the information needed for both on the County of the Week board in the classroom.

Writing: Descriptive Writing. I've started everyone out on a task to describe something at their house. This should be done by Friday and can be worked on either during some free time in class or at home. It should be finished and ready to go for Friday's Writer's Workshop session.

Math: numeration. We are working on a review of place value and number sense, up to 1 million. Most assignments can be completed in class. If not, students will need to finish them at home.

We have two assistants working in our classroom. Today, I introduce you to one... in her own words.

I'd like to send out a warm 'hello' to all of you and say how much I enjoy working with your children. I've met several parents already and look forward to meeting the rest. This is a great group of students who really work well together. I've been very impressed as I've watched them interact.
You might be interested to know a little about me. I have three children (Becca, Jordan, and Ryan) all attending Edith Bowen for the first time this year. So, it's great to be here and see first hand what a wonderful staff there is at Edith Bowen. I have a music (BA) degree from Brigham Young University, and a minor in family science. While I was finishing my degree, I taught music at Park View Elementary School in Payson, UT where I developed a great love for teaching. Since then, I have taught in many settings, including private voice and piano lessons. Over the past two years, I've enjoyed participating in the Multicultural Messiah Choir here in Logan. Our family moved to Logan three years ago from Redlands, CA for my husband to attend USU where he is studying Instructional Technology. As a family, we like to play board games, go fishing, and spend time at the beach. I look forward to getting to know your families as well.

Hey! Here is a strange request. We need some pennies to use in the classroom for an upcoming activity. 100 pennies for each group to be exact. I figure the activity will work best in groups of 2-3. 26/2= 13 groups x 100 = 1,300 pennies. (how many dollars$ would that be?)

So, parents and students, if you have some spare pennies lying around, bring them in. I'll have a container for storage. I can't guarantee you will get the same ones back. (maybe you won't need them back and we will use them for other 'stuff.'
